In 1934, Les Palmer founded the British Columbia Door Company with a vision built on integrity, quality, and innovation. Now celebrating 91 years in operation, BC Door has thrived as a homegrown, family-owned-and-operated business with four generations carrying on the family’s tradition of prime quality millwork. They continue to operate from their original South Vancouver location, building every door by hand using traditional stile-and-rail construction methods.
BC Door’s products have been installed in projects ranging from single-family homes and laneway houses to prestigious West Vancouver waterfront residences, West Coast fishing lodges, and ski resorts at Whistler and Blackcomb. Their doors have been exported to countries as far away as Japan and New Zealand. Each door features a wood-burnt authenticity stamp on the top edge, a guarantee that you’re getting a genuine BC Door product.
Every BC Door is built by skilled craftsmen at their workshop in South Vancouver. Completely Canadian-owned and operated, with 91 years of experience. Solid-wood stile-and-rail construction using premium lumber, more prestigious than veneered lumber. Each door carries a wood-burnt authenticity stamp to guarantee a genuine product.
Everything BC Door builds is made to order, so any custom size or design is possible. Exterior doors are built at 1-3/4” thick as standard, with select models available up to 2-1/4” thick. Interior doors are built at 1-3/8” thick. From oversized doors for dream homes to exact specifications for heritage restorations — if you can dream it, BC Door can build it.
BC Door offers an extensive range of wood species to match any aesthetic: Vertical Grain Douglas Fir (the most popular choice for stain-grade), Character Fir, Western Red Cedar, Select Alder, Red Oak, Maple, Sapele Mahogany, Hemlock, Poplar, and Paint Grade options. Douglas Fir is native to BC’s coastal forest region — a naturally renewable resource that grows right here.
BC Door positions wood as the most environmentally responsible door material. Unlike steel and composites — which require open-pit mining, fossil fuels, and chemical processing — wood is the only biodegradable and renewable option. A properly managed forest is a sustainable resource. BC Door uses data from the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute showing wood doors have the lowest impact across energy use, greenhouse gas, air pollution, water pollution, solid waste, and ecological resource use.
